This behind-the-scenes clip from the upcoming film explores the motorcycles, featuring over 40 vintage bikes used during production.
“The Bikeriders” is an upcoming film starring Austin Butler and Norman Reedus, who delve into the world of motorcycles in a new behind-the-scenes video. Over 40 vintage motorcycles were used during filming, with Butler and Reedus sharing anecdotes about these period-correct bikes from the ’40s and ’50s. Jeff Milburn, the film’s stunt co-coordinator, also discusses the selection process based on “ridability” and “startability” of the motorcycles.
Car and Driver, known for cars but enthusiasts of all vehicles, is excited about “The Bikeriders.” Set for release on June 21, the movie follows a fictional Midwestern motorcycle club, the “Vandals,” transforming in the 1960s from a haven for societal outcasts to a center of escalating violence, reminiscent of real-life motorcycle clubs like Chicago’s Outlaws. Austin Butler plays Benny, the club’s new recruit, while Norman Reedus, known for his real-life passion for motorcycles, portrays Funny Sonny. The four-minute featurette also showcases Reedus’ custom Harley-Davidson Electra Glide, including a 1965 and ’66 model seen in clips.
Butler trained extensively for his role, navigating challenges like vintage drum brakes’ limited stopping power compared to modern disc brakes. Reedus adds humor, recounting his character’s bike, a composite of different eras—late ’40s Springer front end, ’50s frame, and a ’70s motor—due to a storyline twist involving an engine swap.
Directed by Jeff Nichols and based on Danny Lyon’s 1968 book, “The Bikeriders” co-stars Tom Hardy and Jodie Comer. The film promises an authentic portrayal of motorcycle culture and is eagerly anticipated for its theatrical release this month.
