ByteDance’s Singapore office was struck by a mass food poisoning incident on Tuesday, impacting 60 people, according to local authorities.
The Singapore Food Agency and Ministry of Health, in a joint statement to CNBC, announced they are investigating suspected gastroenteritis cases linked to the tech giant’s office. “As of July 30, 2024, 60 individuals have reported gastroenteritis symptoms, with 57 seeking medical attention at hospitals,” the statement said. Local newspaper The Straits Times reported that the Singapore Civil Defence Force deployed personnel, ambulances, fire engines, and a mass decontamination vehicle to the scene after receiving medical assistance calls.
A ByteDance spokesperson told CNBC via email that the company is “investigating the matter and working with relevant authorities,” and has “taken immediate steps to support all affected employees, including coordinating with emergency services for care.”
The affected individuals reported symptoms such as abdominal pain and vomiting. Several people were treated on-site by SCDF paramedics at the office in Singapore’s business district. ByteDance confirmed that employees at its One Raffles Quay office fell ill following a visit to a canteen in the building. The buffet section of the canteen has been “closed until investigations are complete,” according to CNA.
Singapore is a key headquarters for TikTok, and ByteDance CEO Shou Zi Chew is a third-generation Singaporean. The short-video platform has faced increased scrutiny in the U.S. over its Chinese ownership. In April, the U.S. government passed a bill that could force the app’s Chinese owner to sell it or face a ban. TikTok is currently suing the U.S. government to block the bill, claiming it violates the law.
