Sen. Jon Ossoff Signals Support for Trump Impeachment at Georgia Town Hall
Senator Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., expressed support for impeaching President Donald Trump during a town hall held near Atlanta on Friday. Addressing the crowd, Ossoff stated that Trump’s actions “have already exceeded any prior standard for impeachment.”
Referring to a recent incident, Ossoff said, “Just 48 hours ago, I saw him granting audiences to people who buy his meme coin. When the sitting President of the United States is effectively selling access in exchange for what amounts to direct payments, it’s unquestionably an impeachable offense.” The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment Friday evening.
The town hall, streamed online by NBC affiliate WXIA, featured Ossoff—who is currently seeking reelection to the Senate—responding to a constituent’s question about why Democrats haven’t moved to impeach Trump. The attendee voiced concern over Trump’s actions, which she felt were pushing the country toward authoritarianism.
“Do more,” the attendee urged. “I like you and I’ll vote for you if you’re brave and do what we need. We need him impeached. We need him removed.”

Ossoff replied that he “strongly” agreed with her concerns but noted that impeachment is not viable under the current political landscape, where Republicans control the House of Representatives—the body responsible for initiating impeachment proceedings.
“The only way to achieve what you want is to win a majority in the U.S. House,” he said. “And believe me, I’m working on that every single day.”
He also cited Trump’s alleged defiance of a federal court order as another grounds for impeachment. Though Ossoff didn’t specify the case, his comments followed Democratic criticism of Trump for reportedly ignoring a Supreme Court ruling requiring the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national formerly living in Maryland who was deported to El Salvador.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee condemned Ossoff’s remarks, calling them “disgusting” and accusing him of trying to “overturn the will of Georgia voters who just elected President Trump.” With these comments, Ossoff joins a growing list of Democratic lawmakers advocating for Trump’s impeachment during his second term.
Rep. Al Green, D-Texas—who pushed for Trump’s impeachment during his first term and was removed from Trump’s joint address to Congress in March—was the first Democrat this cycle to call for impeachment. Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Mich., also recently announced his full support for impeaching Trump, accusing him of defying a lawful Supreme Court decision.
Trump was impeached twice during his first term, though he was acquitted by the Senate both times. Ossoff, who wasn’t in office for the first trial, voted to convict during the second.
To impeach Trump again, Democrats would need a majority in the House and two-thirds of the Senate—an unlikely scenario given that Republicans currently control both chambers. Still, support for impeachment reflects a growing desire among Democratic voters for party leaders to more aggressively push back against Trump’s policies and behavior.
According to a recent NBC News poll, nearly two-thirds of Democrats would prefer party leaders stand firm on their positions—even if it means losing out on bipartisan progress—while fewer than one-third want to see compromises with Trump.
