Two males accused of posing as federal brokers had been arrested after allegedly making an attempt to rip-off an 85-year-old Washington, D.C., man into handing over greater than $200,000 in gold bars, police mentioned Friday.
The Metropolitan Police Division mentioned Chu Lin, 50, of Recent Meadows, New York, and Xiean Cheng, 42, of Cornelius, North Carolina, had been arrested after allegedly exhibiting up on the sufferer’s house to gather the gold.
Each males had been charged with second-degree monetary fraud.

In line with police, the scheme started July 8 when scammers contacted the sufferer by e mail and later by cellphone whereas posing as federal brokers.
The scammers allegedly advised the sufferer that funds in his checking account had been “in jeopardy of being misplaced” except he secured the cash by buying gold bars and turning them over.
Believing the scheme was official, the sufferer tried to buy greater than $200,000 value of gold bars earlier than the gold vendor acknowledged the obvious rip-off and alerted him, police mentioned.

“Pondering that the rip-off was official, the sufferer tried to buy over $200,000 value of gold bars and was alerted by the gold vendor that he was being scammed,” police mentioned.
The gold vendor then alerted MPD’s Monetary and Cyber Crimes Unit and the FBI, based on authorities.

When the alleged scammers later arrived on the sufferer’s house to retrieve the gold bars, officers with MPD’s Violent Crime Suppression Division arrested Lin and Cheng, police mentioned.
