Zuckerberg: AI Superintelligence Is Within Reach, Marking a Shift Toward Personal Empowerment
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Wednesday that the development of superintelligent AI is now “within sight” and that it could signal the beginning of a “new era of personal empowerment.”
In a video posted to Facebook, Zuckerberg explained that Meta’s vision for AI diverges from the rest of the industry. Instead of focusing on automating jobs — a controversial trend as more companies look to replace entry-level positions with AI — Meta plans to develop AI systems aimed at improving people’s personal lives.
“AI keeps accelerating, and over the past few months, we’ve begun to see glimpses of AI systems improving themselves,” Zuckerberg said. “So developing superintelligence is now in sight, but there’s this big open question about what we should direct superintelligence towards.”
Zuckerberg believes the most profound impact will come from giving individuals access to a “personal superintelligence” — an AI that helps users reach their goals, express creativity, build stronger relationships, and grow into the best versions of themselves.
Last month, Meta announced the launch of Meta Superintelligence Labs, a new division dedicated to advancing this next wave of AI. Zuckerberg has said that Meta expects to invest “hundreds of billions of dollars” in the effort, including the construction of multiple AI supercomputing clusters. One of those is set to be completed by next year.
Meanwhile, demand for AI in personal life is already growing. A recent survey from Elon University found that 51% of respondents use large language models more for personal activities than for professional ones.
Zuckerberg also hinted at hardware being a key part of this vision, saying he sees “personal devices like glasses” playing a major role in integrating superintelligence into daily routines — a nod to Meta’s ongoing work on AI-powered smart glasses.
“I believe deeply in building personal superintelligence for everyone,” he said. “And at Meta, we have the resources to build the massive infrastructure required and the ability to deliver new technology to billions of people.”
Meta is aggressively hiring AI talent to support this mission. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently revealed that Meta has been attempting to recruit OpenAI employees with offers of $100 million compensation packages. According to Altman, none of his top employees have accepted the offers — so far.
