An American Airlines plane’s engine caught fire after landing at Denver International Airport on Thursday evening, officials reported.
American Airlines Flight 1006 was traveling from Colorado Springs to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport when it was diverted to Denver, according to the airline.
The Boeing 737-800 touched down safely around 5:15 p.m. local time after the crew detected engine vibrations, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated. As the aircraft taxied to the gate, the engine ignited, prompting an evacuation via emergency slides.

American Airlines described the incident as an “engine-related issue” but did not provide further details. The flight carried 172 passengers and six crew members.
The Denver Fire Department confirmed that twelve individuals sustained minor injuries and were transported to hospitals. Videos shared on social media depict thick smoke surrounding the plane at the gate as passengers evacuate onto a wing. Another clip shows crew members on the ground attempting to douse the flames.
“We appreciate the swift and decisive response of our crew members, DEN team, and first responders, prioritizing the safety of everyone on board and on the ground,” American Airlines said in a statement.
The FAA has launched an investigation into the incident.
