A massive power outage swept across large parts of Spain and Portugal on Monday, prompting widespread disruptions. Spain’s power grid operator, Red Eléctrica, announced it was collaborating with energy companies to restore electricity as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, E-Redes, a Spanish electricity grid monitoring firm, stated it was working to reestablish power in phases and described the situation as part of a broader European issue.

In Spain, several Madrid metro stations were evacuated, and major traffic congestion developed in the city center as traffic lights failed, according to Cadena SER radio. In Portugal, police reported that traffic signals were down nationwide, Lisbon and Porto metro systems were shut down, and train services were suspended.
