🇮🇳 India’s First Astronaut to the ISS: A Historic Leap into Space
Shubhanshu Shukla, a 39-year-old Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot, is poised to become the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS). This milestone marks a significant advancement in India’s space exploration efforts, positioning the nation alongside global spacefaring powers like the United States, Russia, and China.
🚀 Mission Overview
Shukla is part of the four-person crew of Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), launching from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The mission utilizes a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and capsule. Under the command of former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, the crew also includes Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary. Together, they will spend approximately 14 days aboard the ISS, conducting over 60 scientific experiments in areas such as microgravity research, Earth observation, and biological and material sciences .

Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced intentions to send an Indian to the Moon by 2040 .

Shukla’s path to space began with his commission into the IAF in 2006. As a seasoned test pilot with over 2,000 flight hours on various aircraft, including the Su-30 MKI and MiG-29, he was selected for India’s human spaceflight program in 2019. He underwent rigorous training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia and further preparation at ISRO’s center in Bengaluru. His selection for the Gaganyaan mission was announced in 2024 .
